Virginia was founded
Virginia became the first permanet english colony in North America.
Many plantation owners became wealthy by growing and selling cash crops such as tobacco and rice. -
The First Thanksgiving
The person who made the feast , Thanksgiving was William Bradford. Also, Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to plant crops. So now the Pilgrims can eat what they planted for Thanksgiving and more. -
New York and New Jersey
Since James owned the land he named it New York. James owned most of the land and gave the rest to 2 friends. John Berkeley and George Carteret. They made 2 colonies named East Jersey and West Jersey. In 1664 the colonies joined and became New Jersey. -
Maryland
King Charles I of England gave land in North America to Cecilius Calvert.
A refuge is safe place. In 1649, the Maryland goverment passed the Toleration Act. -
Rhode Island
Rhode Island was founded for dissenters to have religious freedom. A dissenter is a person who disagrees with his or her ruler. Roger Williams was a dissenter who wanted more religious freedom. William believed government should make laws about religion he was banished from Massachusetts. In 1636 William founded a new colony, Rhode Island. -
Connecticut
A minister named Thomas Hooker did not like some of the of the rules made by Puritan's leaders. He wanted to form a new community where all men and women could vote. -
New Hampshire became a colony

Pennsylvania
The colony of Pennsylvania was the idea of William Penn. In England, Penn was a member of a religious group called Society of Friends, or Quakers. Penn and many Quakers were put in jail for their beliefs. Some were even killed. -
Georgia
King George the 2 gave land to James Oglethorpe. James wanted poor people to get to start a new life, he offered them a free boat ride and some land. He named it Georgia after king George.
