Roanoke Island
Roanoke was loacted off the coast of North Carolina. It was settled in August of 1587 (exact date unknown). By 1590, the colony and settlers had disappeared with no trace left behind. The only think left behind was the word "Croatoan" carved into wood. It is unknown what happened to them. -
Birth of Virginia Dare

Virginia Dare was the first child born to English parents in the Americas. She was born in Roanoke and disappeared with the other settlers. -
Cape Henry
Cape Henry located at the northeast corner of Virginia Beach. It marked the first permenant English settlement. It was named for Henry the prince of the Wales. A lighthouse monument was put up in 1935 to mark the site of this settlement. -
Slaves in America

Exact date unknown. The first African slaves to America were brought to Virginia in 1619 to work tobacco fields. -
Plymouth, MA
A group of Puritans migrated from in England and settled in Plymouth in 1620. These Puritans are now called Pilgrims. -
French and Indian War
The French and Indian War was fought between the French and the British over land expansion in America. It began in 1756 and ended in 1763. -
Boston Tea Party
American patriots dressed up as Mohawk Indians and threw boxes of tea into the Boston Harbor as a protest against high taxes and against the East India Company. -
Paul Revere's Midnight Ride
Paul Revere began his ride to warn the Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British were coming. -
Declaration of Independence
Members of Congress sign the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776, but not signed until August. -
First American Flag
The first American flag representing the original thirteen colonies was presented. It had thirteen stripes, alternating between red and white and thirteen stars.
