Sir Walter Raleigh sent a group of more than 100 people led by John White to Roanoke Island. John White was appointed as governor of Roanoke colony. John white had to return to England for more supplies in late 1587. White wasn't able to return due to war until 1590 and found the colony abandoned.

Many supply ships from the Caribbean docked in Boston in spring of 1721. A crewmember from one of the ships had smallpox. Although he was under quarantine, by autumn the disease had spread through Boston and surrounding areas.
