This was a nearby Indian tribe that killed 15 men that came after Queen Elizabeth's 100 men. When the 100 men arrived, they killed a local Croatan chief. So the Croatans got revenge. -
Roanoke
This is an island off the coast of North Carolina. In 1585 Queen Elizabeth sent 100 men to settle Roanoke. -
Jamestown
Jamestown is located in today's Virginia. It was the first successful English settlement in America. It is named for King James I. When people first got there, it was winter and they could not grow crops. John Smith took over. -
Crops in Jamestown
Jamestown was also a colony that grew a lot of tobacco. John Rolfe learned how to grow tobacco from local Indians. It was a huge cash crop in the middle and southern colonies. Tobacco cost a lot of money in England. Middle colonies were known for growing wheat, too. -
Mayflower
The Mayflower was a ship carrying 104 pilgrims to a new land to have religious freedom. They wanted to land in Jamestown but high winds blew them off course and they landed somewhere different. -
Cape Cod
Cape Cod is where the Mayflower landed in 1620 with the 104 pilgrams looking for religous freedom in the new world.When they got there it was winter and they could not grow crops.So many people were starving and died and they got help from Native helped them survive and they lived. -
Southern Colonies
They include Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. They grew tobacco as a cash crop. These colonies had a very long growing season. -
Middle Colonies
In 1681 is when the middle colonies were founded. They include New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. -
Louisiana
Robert La Salle founded Louisiana. The King liked Louisiana for fur trading routes. -
NEW ENGLAND
New England was one of the very cold places where people did not grow an lot of crops. A lot of those include New Hampshire, Connecticut,Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
