  • Jamestown Founded in Virginia

    The first permanent English Colony in North America is founded at Jamestown Virginia,

  • Tobacco first planted in Virginia

    John Rolfe brought West Indies Tobacco and found it grew very well in Virginia providing a cash crop for the colony.

  • First Africans arrive in Virginia

    20 or so Africans arrived beginning the trans-Atlantic Slave trade.

  • Pilgrims arrive in Plymouth, Massachusetts

    The Mayflower Compact offers the first example of self-government in the colonies and Settlement of New England begins.

  • Massacre of 1622

    A native American attack on Jamestown leaves 342 English Settlers dead and opens the door for increased violence on Native Population and the excuse the English were looking for to push the Native Population off their territorial lands in the Virginia area.

  • Dutch found Colony of New Amsterdam

    The Dutch Trading post is very successful financially, and allows many different religions and ethnicities to settle.

  • Great Puritan Migration to Massachusetts Bay Begins

    Lead by Governor John Winthrop, thousands of Puritans from Europe begin settling Massachusetts Bay colony near Boston.

  • Sir George Calvert, Lord Baltimore founds Maryland Colony

    Originally meant as a haven for Catholics, Maryland developed an Agrarian Society similar to Virginia.

  • Roger Williams founds Rhode Island

    Roger Williams founds Rhode Island on the Idea of Religious Freedom after being Banished from Massachusetts Bay.

  • Thomas Hooker founds Connecticut

    Thomas Hooker leads a group of settlers from Massachusetts Bay to Connecticut and establishes the colony.

  • Fundamental Orders of Connecticut written.

    Considered the first written constitution in America.

  • Anglo-Dutch Wars Begin

    A series of conflicts between the two nations begin. The lasting result is England's capturing of New Amsterdam which becomes the English Colony of New York.

  • Navigation Acts begin to limit Colonial Economy

    A series of restrictive trade laws begin to force Mercantilism Economic rules onto the 13 Colonies and prevent trade with countries other than England.

  • Province of Carolina Founded

    Named for King Charles II

  • William Penn Founds Pennsylvania

    Originally founded as a safe place for Quakers, it was a haven for all religions, nationalities and social classes.

  • King William's War Ends

    1689-1697 First French and Indian War. England gains part of Nova Scotia

  • Colonies reach population of 250,000 colonists

    The population continues to grow reaching a quarter million people less than 100 years after the first settlement.

  • Queen Anne's War Ends with Treaty of Utrect

    1702-1713 Second French and Indian War. Spain also fights, allies with French. Florida and Carolina attack each other. England gains Hudson Bay, NewFoundland, and more of Nova Scotia with the Treaty of Utrect.

  • French City of New Orleans founded at mouth of Mississippi River

    French pioneers explored and navigated the full length of the Mississippi River creating a settlement at the mouth to provide a port to aid in the trade of Furs trapped in the interior of the continent.

  • First Settlers arrive in Georgia

    James Oglethorpe founds the colony to act as a buffer between the other colonies and Spanish Florida.

  • King George's War Ends

    1744-1748 Third French and Indian War. Very Bloody, but no major territorial gains for either side.

  • Population Reaches 1.25 Million Colonists

    The population of the North American Colonies grows at an incredible rate with population growing by 1 million in just 50 year's time!
