The Old Larchmont Building
Students begin attending classes at the old Larchmont building, a previously abandoned elementary school. The college began operating as the Norfolk based William and Mary campus and was called "The Division". -
Lewis W. Webb Jr. joins faculty
Webb has long been called the father of Old Dominion University. He helped the college gain university status. -
The newly built Administration building
The Administration building was built with funding from the Public Works Administration. It housed six classrooms, offices, a pool and a library. -
The donation of the Technical Institute
The Federal Works Agency gifted two wooden barracks to The Divison. One of these buildings became the Technical Institute. It housed workshops, classroom, offices and a radio station. It was used for war time training. -
Approval of first four year degrees
Still a shoot of William and Mary, the parent college approves The Division's first four year degree programs: nursing, teacher education and business. -
Old Dominon college is born
The Division is released from its ties to William and Mary and becomes its own institution. Six months later, it is named Old Dominion. -
The Webb Center
After the split from William and Mary, Old Dominon college wanted to give its students a place to congregate, study and eat. The Webb Center began constuction and was named after Lewis Webb. -
First Women's Studies Program Begins
The first Women's Studies program in Virginia is created. It follows the creation of ODU's women's center; which focused on the needs and growth of female students. -
Joseph Marchello becomes 4th ODU president
Dr. Joseph Marchello helped create the Peninsula and Virginia Beach education centers, bringing higher learning to more areas of Hampton Roads. -
TELETECHNET is created
The TELETECHNET program is created under the guidance of Anne Raymond Savage. It would eventually bring education to sailors at sea. -
ODU gets lion
In front of Webb Center, ODU placed a huge 6-foot bronze lion that sits atop a fountain. -
Makeover and new motto
ODU's iconic logo is recreated as a stylized lion with a swiping paw. The motto too, gets updated and changes to "A portal to new worlds." -
Opening of "The Ted"
The Ted Constant Convocation Center is officially opened. This center is the new home of the ODU Monarchs and Lady Monarchs basketball teams. It is a hub of diverse entertainment for the entire Hampton Roads community. -
ODU continues to grow
ODU now has 69 bachelor's degrees, 56 master's degrees and 41 doctoral programs. It continues to update and add on to the current buildings and is constantly creating new programs and student organizations.
