Herbert Hoover won the election my a huge margin. He was later blamed for the Great Depression. -
Dust Bowl
After a severe drought in the great plains all the top soil was lifteds up and blanketed the skies. Many farmers fled beacuse of the harsh conditions. It laster from 1930-1939 -
RFC
Hoover created this so that farmers and industry's could get back on their feet. The government spent 2.2 billion to put back into the economy. This helped banks give out loans. -
Bonus Army
WW1 vets who were promised a bonus in the fourties. The vets came together and marched on washington setting uo camo in front of the White House to get their bonuses before the allotted time. Hoover got skittish and sent in the army. The General burnt down their village and attacked the vets. -
Hitler Comes to Power
Adolf Hitler one of the most notorious Dictators comes to power in Germany. He took advantage of the poor economic times to take control of the country. -
F.D.R. is elected
FDR won the election by a landside. He created the idea of the New Deal. He is the 32nd president. -
The New Deal
The new deal is an attempt to bring about programs to fix the economy. It focuses on the three R's Recovery, Reform, and Relief. -
Father Coughlin attacks FDR, Jews
A priest who blamed the wealthy and the jews for the stock market crash. Once a strong supporter of FDR he immiedtly changed views after he was elected. He was one of the first political leaders to reach mass audiences. He wanted the government to take over the whole banking system. -
Indian Reorganization Act
Created to reacognize Indian government systems. It also gave them the ability to have their own credit system and control of their lands. -
Social Security Acts
This gave the retired and elderly guarentted money. It also gave the unemployed and disabled money. -
Neutrality Acts
A series of laws that said that the sale of arms or loans to warring country's was illegal, also you could not travel to those country's. This was an attempt for the U.S. to stay neutral in the war. -
GM Sit-Down Strike
This is when the workers took over the company and refused to work untill their needs were met. This is how the UAW was formed. -
Rape of Nanking
This is when the Japenese army marched into Nanking and killed 300,000 people and raped 80,000 women and children. -
The Grapes of Wrath
A novel wrote by John Steinbeck. Tells about he life of people who lived in Oklahoma and left to California during the Dust Bowl.
