Herbert Hoover takes office
Herbert Hoover became the 31st President of the United States in 1929. Only 8 monthes after taking office did the Great Depression strike. Many people clamed him for the stock market to fall. -
Father Coughlin attacks FDR, Jews
Father Coughlin was a strong headed Roman Catholic priest. He started off as a Roosevelt supporter, but soon began to be quiet harsh on him. Later he hinted towards planning an attack on Jewish bankers. -
The Dust Bowl
In the summer of 1931, rain stopped coming, so the crops soon died leaving the land dry and dusty. When the winds picked up they blew sand all around causing major sand/ dust storms. To escape death by dust pneumonia, many people packed up and headed to California. -
RFC
Its full name is Reconstruction Finance Corporation. This angency gave away two billion dollars to help the state and local governments. The loans went towards banks, railroads, mortgage assossiations and other businessess. -
The Bonus Army
The Bonus Army was made up of a group of veterans from WWI. They had been promised bonuses and demanded them immediately. When they were ignored Walter W. Waters lead them to Washington D.C. to protest. -

Adolf Hitler was appointed a chancellor in January, 1933. As the years went on he gained everyone's trust and soon began to abuse all of his power. -

They were a series of economic programs that were approved by Congress during Roosevelt's 1st term of Presidency. It focuesed on the 3 'R's: reform, recovery, and relief. -

This was also known as the Wheeler-Howard Act. It secured many of the Indians rights. -

Many Neutrality Acts were passed throughout the 1930s. Europe and Asia were facing hard times that would eventually lead to World War II, but the U.S didn't want anything to do with it because WWI had cost so much. -

The Social Security Act was signed by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1935. This gave insurance to the old and even the unemployed. -

Rape of Nanjing
This event is more frequently called the Nanking Massacre. It occurred for six weeks after Japan captured Nanjing. Many Chinese were killed and raped during this time. -
The Grapes of Wrath
This is a novel written by John Steinbeck. This story takes place during the Great Depression, and it is about a poor family living in Oklahoma who are suffering in the Dust Bowl. They move to California in hope of new jobs and new land.
