Herbert Hoover takes office
Only a year after being eleceted, Hoover was faced with much more than any persident ever had. The stock market crashed in 1929, leaving the country in a depression. Trying to combat the depression with voulenteering caused Hoover to be attacked and hated by many. -
The Dust Bowl
The dust bowl, from 1930-1936 where sever dust storms ravaged the plains. After over farming the land, the topsoil blew away, creating huge clouds of dust that severly damaged the livelyhood of western farmers. -
Father Coughlin attcks FDR and Jews
Throughout the 1930's, Father Coughlin of Royal Oak, Michigan, used radio to voice his opinions on the U.S. He largley supported FDR, but after passing the New Deals, he attacked him as well as Jewish bankers, supporting anti-semetic belifes and actions. -
The Bouns Army
In the summer of 1932, WWI vetrans stormed the capitol, demanding to recieve their promised bonuses early in light of the current depression. After being refused their bounuses and not leaving the grounds, the vetrans and their families were forced into their camp as the U.S. military burned it down. -
FDR elected
Elected in November 1932, FDR was thrust into presidency during the bottom of the great depression. Creating a system of programs called the New Deals he helped lift spirits and get the U.S. out of the depression. -
The New Deal
Created by FDR, the New Deal was a system of government funded programs to help out during the great depression. The programs focused on the "3 R's": Relief. Recovry and Reform. -
Hitler Takes Power
On January 30, 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazi Party. The Enabaling Act was passed in March, giving Hitler legal, constitiunal, dictoral power. -
Indian Reorganizaton Act
After being placed on reservations life was hard for native americans. The Indian Reorginazition Act gauerenteed the native americans, self government and was intended to create a steady economy within the reservatoins. -
Neutrality Acts
The Neutrality acts were passed in 1935, stating that the U.S could not sell weapons, or sponser any waring countries. These were passed so that the U.S. could not be forced into anothe rwar. -
Social Security Act
On August 14, 1935 President Roosevelt passed the Social Security Act. This act was created to assist the elderly, unemployed and disabled, giving them cash assistance when they could not work. -
GM sit-down strike
The GM plants in Flint, thriving with their new UAW occupacnce went on a sit-down strike, which means they occupy the plant, keeping workers from working and managment out. They elected their own "mayor" and the UAW had food sent in every day as supporters rallied outside. -
The Rape of Nanjing
The Rape of Nanjing was a result of the taking of the city Nanjing in the second-sino Japnese war. During a 6 week period, thousands of Japnese civilians and solidiers were killed and 20,000-80,00 women were raped. -
The Grapes of Wrath
A novel by John Stienbeck set during the great depression. The book focuses on a farming family in Oaklohama, forced to move to California by drought and the dust bowl.
