Herbert Hoover Takes Office
Hoover easily won the Republican vote; although, he had no previous political experience. Hoover was blamed my a majority of Americans for the Great Depression, he is most famous for being labeled in slogans and after places; for example, Hoovervilles. The economy never recovered during his term in office. -
The Dust Bowl
The Dust Bowl, or more generally known as the dirty thirties, involved major dust storms that ruined crops and farms that spread from the midwest all the way to the Atlantic. This catastrophe lasted from 1930 til' 1936. Due to the lack of nutrition to the soil, it dried up and turned to dust and began blowing around, making it virturally impossible for anyone in the areas to breathe. -

Hoover thought that the strategy that should be used to halt the downward spiral of the economy for industry and farming and that confidence could be set back in for investors if Uncle Sam put more into banks and railroads. The 31st president created the Reconstruction Finance Corporation that included 2.2 billion dollars to assure large banks and railroads stability. -
Bonus Army
Vertrans of WWI marched into Washington D.C in demand for check bonuses that they were guarenteed somewhere near the time of returning from the war. The vets started to get restless when they heard that they would not be allowed to collect these checks until 1945. -
Hitler takes power
Adolf Hitler was appointed as Chancellor by President Hindenburg. Hitler became the prominent figure of the Nazi Party, He promised people that he could help bring Germany out of the depression and that he would do whatever it took to create Germany as a world power. -
FDR elected
FDR won the election by a landslide, and it was one of the most critcal elections in US's history. Roosevelt was elected as the 32nd president of the United States. He created the "New Deal" which was an attempt to dig America out of debt by creating a ton of gov. run programs, many people compare this idea to the stimulous that Barack Obama has tried to use today. -
The New Deal
The New Deal was formed of government run programs that FDR created to try and bring America out of the great depression. The New Deal was centered around 3 main ideas: Relief, Reform, and Recovery. Relief for the unemployed and poor, recovery of the economy to regular levels, and reform of the financial system. -
Father Coughlin attacks FDR, Jews
Once a strong supporter of FDR, Father Coughlin changed his views very quickly of the commander in cheif. He was a Catholic priest who spoke out against Jews and Roosevelt during the 1930s. He was one of the first political leaders to reach out to mass audiances through the radio. It is said that more than 30 million tuned into his weekly broadcasts during the decade. -
Indian Reorganization Act
The IRA was also known as the Wheeler-Howard Act or the Indian New Deal. It was a piece of legislation that protected some, but not all, rights that belonged to Native Americans. This act also allowed Indians the right to manage their land the way they wanted to. -
Social Security Acts
The Social Security Acts were a section of the New Deal created by FDR, it gave senior citizens guarenteed money when they retire. During the great depression, it was a spark to a wide cast of new programs created by the government. -
Neutrality Acts
The Neutrality Acts were a handful of acts that were aimed towards the prevention of another war that America would have to become involved with. Many say that these were created because of talks that America's involvment in WWI were soley based on loans and trades with the Allies. -
GM Sit-Down Strike
Starting in 1936, the auto workers at GM created the UAW, which stands for the United Auto Workers. The workers at the plants were not happy with the amount of money that they were recieving so they decided to literatly sat down and refused to work until the conflict was resolved. This strike turned the UAW on to the world. -
Rape of Nanjing
Rape of Nanking, was a mass murder and war rape that took place during the 6 week timespan following the Japanese take over of Nanjing. Hundreds of thousands of Jappaneese citizens were brutially murdered and a reported 80,000 women were raped by soilders in the army. -
The Grapes of Wrath
The Grapes of Wrath is a story authored by John Steinbeck, who was also awarded with the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.The story took place during the Great Depression, the main family, the Joads, are a poor family of farmers who are forced to leave their home in Oklahoma because of drought.
