Stamp Act of 17
This act required colonists to pay for an official stamp when buying paper products. It angered the colonists because they felt Great Britian was taxing them unfairly. -
The Townshend Acts
This act placed duties on glass, lead, paper, paints, and tea. The acts showed that Great Britian had all the power and would tax the colonists no matter what. It angered them even more. -
The Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was a clash between a few colonists in Boston and British soldiers. Some colonists were killed. The Boston Massacre convinced some that the British were against the colonists and thought they were better. It made the British look like they had all the power, which they did. -
Tea Act
The tea act allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to colonists. The colonists thought the tea act would put merchants out of business. It created more tension between Great Britian and the colonists. -
The Boston Tea Party
Colonists in Boston rebeled by going onto British ships and dumping all the tea into the Boston Harbor. The Boston Tea Party angered the British, causing them to tax the colonists more, but it was the first sigh that the colonists wanted to do something about being treated unfairly. -
The Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts closed the Boston Harbor, canceled the Massachusetts charter, accused royal officials of crimes, forced colonists to house soldiers, and made General thomas gage governor of Massachusetts. It was all the colonists could take of being treated unfair before they decided to seperate from Great Britian. -
1st Continental Congress
The Continental Congress was a gathering of colonial leaders who discussed the relationship between Great Britian and the colonies. They gave their ideas on what to do about the relationship between Great Britian and the colonies. They also convinced others to agree with their plans. -
The Battle of Lexington and Concord
A battle that only lasted a few minutes, but was a win for the British. The battle showed that the British has no concern for the colonists, and that the colonists would have to come together to get a victory. -
Second Continental Congress
The second meeting of delegates from the colonies. The delegates were the first to suggest that war should be declaired against Great Britian. -
The Battle of Bunker Hill
The British and colonists fought at Breed's Hill. The British had a force of 2400 men, causing the colonists to retreat. Although the Patriots lost, the showed that they could take on the British. The British saw that the war was not going to be an easy win. -
The Olive Branch Petition
The Olive Branch Petition was the colonies final attempt to make peace with Great Britian. After Great Britian decilned, the colonist felt they needed to take a different approach toward freedom. -
Common Sense
Common Sense was a Pamphlet that was Distributed in Philadelphia. It supported the idea that citizens should make the laws. Although it was a new idea, many colonists agreed with it. They wanted theese types of freedoms and decided to join the war. -
Dorchester Heights
After the British took control of Boston, Washington placed his troops on Nook's Hill and soon regained control of Boston. Regaining control of Boston showed that General Washington could lead the troops. -
The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence formally announced the colonies' break from Great Britian. It showed why they felt they needed to break away and they rights they thought they deserved. King George III wanted to regain control of his colonies. -
The Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga was known as the turning point of the Revolutionary War. The American forces won the battle and even more colonists wanted to join the war. Patriots thought the win would make history. -
The Battle of Trenton
The Battle of Trenton was an important win for the Patriots aganst the Hessians. The colonists saw that they had the ability to win the war, causing more people to join the cause. -
Valley Forge
The conditions at valley Forge were awful during the winter. The soldiers had limited food, clothing, and warmpth. Many died from disease. The conditions at Valley Forge caused some soldiers to desert, and questioned Washingtons ability as a general. -
Capture of Charleston
General Clinton landed 14000 troops in Charleston and took over. They gained 4 ships and 5400 prisoners. The capture of Charleston moved the war to the south, and it made the Patriots more determined to win the war. -
Battle of Yorktown
The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. Cornwallis surrendered after recieving no extra soldiers to help him. The Patriots won. The battle of Yorktown led to the end of the Revolution and to the Treaty of Paris. -
The Treaty of Paris of 1783
The Treaty of Paris of 1783 recognized the independence of the United States. The treaty separated the colonies from Great Britian and gave them trading rights. The colonies were now and independent country.
