Evolution of Public Education in Victorian England

By alhawks
  • Scotland system proposed

At this time every parish (local church community) had a school. This was proposed in England, but did not pass.
  • Education Grant

Parliment gave a very limited grant to education. The money went to churches, who built schools with it. It was the first time the government gave anything to public education.
  • 1870 Education Act

This is the big one. It was the first piece of legislation that let the government establish schools. It created school boards which had the power to observe elementary schooling, and allowed them to maintain and build schools when necessary. They took the money for the schools from taxes. This act caused a huge change in the education, because it got a lot more schools built and it started getting women into schools.
  • National Board of Education

National Board of Education was established, and all children got access to public schools for free.
  • Secondary Schooling

This happened after Queen Victoria's death, so it is out of the era, but it is still insteresting to note that in this year public secondary schooling was made available. In this same year school boards were also eliminated, and the power was given to local government.
