18th Amendment
The 18th Amendment started Prohibition, which made alcohol illegal. It caused more harm than good and was repealed by the 21st amendment. -

The government was scared of communistic views and anarchists trying to endanger America. Police discovered a plot to mail 36 bombs to high ranking government officials. -
Volstead Act
This enabled legislation for the 18th Amendment. It allowed some alcohol to be made for research. -
Palmer Raids
These were attempts to arrest and deport anarchists from the United States. This deported more than 500 citizens. -
19th Amendment Ratified
This amendment gave women the right to vote. It was approved in January, but Senate refused to sign it until October. -
Teapot Dome Affair
In 1922, the Secretary of the Interior leased the Teapot Dome fields to Sinclair Oil without competitive bidding. Sinclair lent the Secretary of the Interior $100,000 interest-free, which caused unrest. -
Sacco & Vanzetti Trial
Sacco and Vanzetti were accused of the murder of a paymaster and a security guard that were delivering a payroll. They were both found guilty and executed. -
National Origins Act
This cut the number of immigrants allowed to come to the U.S. from 357,000 to 164,000. Only 2% of the residents of a country could immigrate to the United States. -
Scopes Trial
High School teacher John Scopes violated the Butler act by teaching evolution. He was found guilty, but the trial was overturned due to a technicality. -
Charles Lindbergh crosses the Atlantic
There was a $25,000 prize for someone that could accomplish a nonstop flight from New York to Paris. He began in almost perfect conditions. After about one and a half days, he landed in Paris. -
1st talking movie, The Jazz Singer is released
The main actor was Al Jolson. The Jazz singer started an era with all movies that talked. -
Herbert Hoover elected President
During the Great Depression, he didn't want to help to much so that people didn't rely on the government. He made many tax cuts while in office. -
Stock Market Crash
The crash wrecked the whole economy and ultimately started the Great Depression. The economy started to rise again at the start of World War II.
