Five things happened in this compromise.
1 California would become a free state.
2 New Mexico and Utah would decide their own fate regauarding slavery.
3 Congress would get rid of the sale of enslaved indivuals in Washington DC.
4 Slavery would remain legal in Washington DC
5 Implemeting a Fugitive Slave Law, in which all the people in the US have to assist in the recovery of escaped slaves from their owners; and denying jury trials to escaped slaves. -
