Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was created by Henry Clay, this compromise allowed Missouri to join as a slave state but to keep the power balance in the senate, it allowed Maine to join as a free state. The compromise also said states joining would be free if they were above the latitude 36 degrees 30 and slave if they were south of that. This was a big cause of the civil war. It kept peace for 30 years but when California joined the south complained because most of its land was south of the line. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner was a radical abolitionist who planned a massive slave rebellion. During the rebellion he and his men killed 57 white people and 100 black people. Months after the rebellion he was found in a swamp on November 11th,1831. This was the reason why later slaves were denied being able to learn how to read. -
California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was an important factor of the Civil war because it brought many people to the territory to allowed California to enter to the Union.Also, the "Gold Rush" brought technology to the west coast because it brought railroads and telegraph. Another key point is that when California enter the Union they enter as a free State ignoring the Missouri Compromise. -
Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 allowed New Mexico and Utah to have popular soveirgnty over slavery or freedom. It prohibited slave sales in Washington D.C. and the south got the Fugitive Slave Act which made it illegal to help runaway slaves. The compromise kept peace for another 10 years but as Kansas and Nebraska joined violence was not able to be avoided. -
Kansass-Nebraska Act
As Kansas and Nebraska prepared to join the Union the south said that it was not fair to have two free states join and no slave states join because of the power balance. Though both states were obove the latitude 36 degrees 30 north line, one was joined as a free state and one as a slave state. After they joined the Union they had elections for their representatives of the state. The north refused to accept results because they thought people illegally voted. -
Bleeding Kansas
A compromise on the issue of slavery would not be possible due to the example of senseless killing through "Bleeding Kansas." "Bleeding Kansas" started over northerners and southerners trying to convince the other side of their opinion on slavery for popular sovereinity attacking and killing. Pro-slavery Missourians, "Border Ruffians", crossed border to intimidate those voting for kansas to be a free state -
Formation of Republican Party
Due to northern outrage over "Bleeding Kansas", the Republican party formed firmly on the belief slavery could not be spread. This party developed from the Free-soilers. With the south not liking the Republican Party because of their believe of slavery not spreading. -
Supreme Court Rulling on Dred Scott Case
The Supreme Court ruled that blacks, all blacks, could never be citizens of the US; and declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional therefore opening slavery to all of the country territories. The decission made the North mad because they were against slavery but made the South happy because they could take their slaves were ever they wanted. -
Harpers Ferry
Jhon Brown enter to a U.S arsenal and killed 2 white mans and 1 free black. He wanted to get the weapons to give to the slave so they could cause an uproar against their owners but him and his followers were capture by Robert E, Lee. The South didnt like this because they were afraid of what could happen to them. -
Election of !860
The presidential election was going on and the people that opposed slavery had one candidate, Abraham Lincoln. The people for slavery had a few candidates and the votes were split. Lincoln won without one southern state, the south worried that a anti-slavery person would be elected and end slavery. After Lincoln won the south split from the Union and then started the Civil War. -
Seccession
The first State to leave the Union Was South Carolina that had tried to leave before but weren't allowed but after South Carolina Left The rest of the South left the Union calling themself Confederate States Of America. the South enjoyed this because they had slavery but the North were angry because they left and the Civil War started with the attack of Fort Sumter.
