1.2 Timeline Languages

  • Plankalkul

    Plankalkul was developed for engineering purposes. It was designed by Konrad Zuse. Plankalkul means "formal system for planning".
  • BASIC

    BASIC short for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code was made for easy beginner use. The language was made by John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz. It was mainly made so that anyone could try and pick up the language and use it for their own use.
  • Fortran

    Fortran comes from the name Formula Translation. It was designed by John Backus. The design supports scientific and engineering applications.
  • Math-Matic

    Math-Matic was designed by Remington Rand. It was designed for business use. The name Math-Matic comes from Flow-matic, what the program was based on.
  • Lisp

    Lisp was made by John McCarthy. It was developed to for mathematical data usage. It was also used for AI research.
  • COBOL

    COBOL was made by CODASYL. It was created for business and finance. No reason for the name was found.
  • RPG

    RPG is normally used for business. It was created by IBM.
  • Logo

    Logo's name came from the greek word logos meaning word or thought. You use the program to create turtle graphics. It was created by Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon.
  • B

    B was created by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie. It was made for machine independent applications. The name B may come from the language Bon but nothing is certain.
  • Pascal

    Pascal was made to encourage good programming and data structure. It was designed by Niklaus Wirth. It was named after the French mathematician Blaise Pascal.
  • C

    C was made by Dennis Ritchie. It was designed to be used by most devices, but therefore has low-level capabilities. The reason it was named C was not found.
  • ML

    ML short for Meta Language. It is mainly used for programming language research. It was created by Robin Milner and others at the University of Edinburgh.
  • SQL

    SQL or Structured Query Language was designed by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce
  • Ada

    Ada was made by a team led by Jean Ichbiah. It was first appeared in 1980. It was mainly made for the US Military so they could pilot different machines. It had to be reliable and be able to scale. Ada is named after Ada Lovelace, one of the first computer programmers.
  • C++

    C++ was designed by Bjarne Stroustrup. The program allows for efficiency and flexibility. It is mainly used for desktop applications and servers. It was originally named C with Classes but then was renamed.
  • Delphi (Object Pascal)

    Delphi was made by a team led by Larry Tesler. It was made to support MacApp. It was named after the original language Pascal.
  • Python

    Python is known as a general purpose program. It was created by Guido van Rossum.
  • Visual Basic

    Visual Basic was designed as a beginner program. It was created by microsoft with this intent.
  • Java

    Java was developed by James Gosling. It was made as a general program language that could be used on anything. It was named Java after Java coffee.
  • Javascript

    Javascript was designed by Brendan Eich. It was designed as a web page design as well as video games. It was officially called Livescript but then was changed.
  • PHP

    PHP is designed for web design and also has a general purpose. It was designed by Rasmus Lerdorf.
