This treaty defined boundary lines with the Spanish and America. It granted free navigation of the Mississippi to American Ships. -
Treaty of Granville
The United States and many Native American tribes signed this treaty in 1795 to help gain a small portion of territory in the Northwest area. They basically now had access to southeastern Ohio and northern Illinois. -
Mexican Populates Texas
Mexico starts populating Texas in 1819. The Mexican Liberals ended up being in charge of the colonization. These individuals greatly appreciated North American cultutre. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
This is a treaty with Spain that was signed in Washington for the purchase of Florida. In exchange for Florida, the United States gave up all rights to Texas. The Adams-Onis treaty caused such an uprise, that the US quickly tried to acquire Texas back by purchase. -
Mexican Independence
Mexico achieves FULL independence from Spain. After 10 long years of war, they finally were able to achieve their dream of defeating the Spainish. -
Government inTexas
A provisonal goverment is formed in Texas in San Felipe de Austin. The council supports the 1824 Mexican constitution and appoints a govenor, but does not declare independence quite yet. -
Distant Texan Government
Texas is under the control of Coahuila, a Mexican state. The capital is also a long distance from Texas and many complained. A new Mexican Constitution is created in 1836, which abolishes states entirely from picking on the Texans anymore by requiring that everything be based in Mexico City. -
The Alamo
The Alamo was a major battle in the Texas Revolution. The Spanish attacked and killed almost everyone; hardly any survived. This battle inspired others to come and help the Texans. -
Texan Independence
The Texas Declaration of Independence is made, which creates the Republic of Texas (Lonestar). This independent state is never officially recognized by either Mexico or the United States. America believes Texas will become another "slave state." -
Battle of San Jacinto
General Sam Houston and his army defeated General Antonio Lopex de Santa Anna's Mexican soldiers. Santa Anna is captured as a prisoner the following day, and is forced to sign peace treaties which grants Texas its independence. -
US-Canada Border Agreement
America and Great Britain agree to a treaty that settle ANglo-American disagreements over the United States-Canadian boundary in the Pacific Northwest area. It is the longest border in the world. -
Mormon Migration
The Mormons traveled to Utah in search of peace after being severely persecuted. They traveled by using hand carts and walking miles a day. They later made a holiday in Ohio in honor of this migration period. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The treaty between Mexico and the United States that brought an end to the Mexican War. This drew the boundary between the two countries at the Rio Grande and the Gila River. -
Free Soil Party Starts
Members from the Whig and Liberty parites who were against slavery joined together to form this party, which opposed the expansion of slavery into the new western territories they had just acquired. In 1848, they voted Martin Van Buren as their presidental candidate. -
California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was a search for gold in the California area. It attracted many immigrants from Latin America, Europe, Australia, and China. The "rush for gold" ended up bringing around 300,000 people to America. -
Homestead Act
An act passed by Congress that promised ownership of 160-acres of public land to a citizen who had lived and farmed on the land for five years. -
Alaska Purchase
The United States purchased Alaksa from Russia for 7.2 million dollars. Russia was eager to sell to America because they feared that if they were in a war with Britain, it would seize the land, so therefore they allowed the US to purchase. -
First Transcontinental Railroad
The Railroad provided a way of travel across the country. It connected the Atlantic and Pacific coast. The construction and use of the railroad was protected by the Pacific Railroad Act. -
Oklahoma Land Rush
The time when Oklahoma allowed whites to enter and settle on what was known as "Indian territory". There was about two million acres of land up for grabs. -
Battle of Wounded Knee
The American troops killed around 200 Native Americans in this battle which took place at a creek in Southwest South Dakota. This battle is known as one of the greatest injustices that the US brought onto the Indians.
