Women Granted the Right to Vote in U.S.August 18, 1920
The 19th amendment (Women's right to vote) was introduced in 1878 but was not passed by Congress until June 4, 1919. Six days later it was ratified by the legislatures of Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan. The amendment gathered 22 of the needed 36 ratifications by the end of 1919. On August 18, 1920, the Tennessee legislature ratified it, officially making it part of the constitution. I believe this is is historically significant because this marked the beginning of women's equality.
  • Irish Free State Proclaimed

    Irish Free State Proclaimed
The Irish Free State, comprising four-fifths of Ireland, is declared, ending a five-year Irish struggle for independence from Britain. Like other nations of the former British Empire, Ireland was to remain part of the British Commonwealth, symbolically subject to the king. The Irish Free State later severed ties with Britain and is now called the Republic of Ireland. I think this event is important because it showed that countries were still fighting for their independence from Britain.
  • V.I. Lenin Dies

    V.I. Lenin Dies
A third stroke in March 1923 left Lenin bedridden and took away his ability to speak. Such was the pain experienced by Lenin during his final months, that he begged Stalin to obtain a dose of potassium cyanide to put him out of his misery. I think this is important because this event helped put Stalin in power.

    Hitler's Mein Kampf Published
On this day in 1925, Volume One of Adolf Hitler’s philosophical autobiography, Mein Kampf, is published. It was a blueprint of his agenda for a Third Reich and a clear exposition of the nightmare that will envelope Europe from 1939 to 1945. The book sold a total of 9,473 copies in its first year. I think event is significant because this helped Hitler's influence over Germany.

    U.S Stock market crashes.
On October 18 the fall began. Panic set in, and on October 24—Black Thursday—a record 12,894,650 shares were traded. Investment companies and leading bankers attempted to stabilize the market by buying up great blocks of stock,. On Monday, however, the market went into free fall. Black Monday was followed by Black Tuesday, in which stock prices collapsed completely. This is important because it effected the whole world. For example, Germany went through economic trouble a second time.
  • Gandhi's Salt March

    Gandhi's Salt March
Mahatma Gandhi and a small band of supporters set off on a 241-mile march across western India. Gandhi had devised the walk as an act of nonviolent protest against the British colonial government’s salt monopoly.Upon arriving at the coastal city of Dandi in early April, he illegally collected salt from the seaside as a symbolic act of defiance against the British Raj. This is an important event because Gandhi was making change without violence.
