  • The Slave Trade

    With affect from the Industrial Revolution, labour was increased in colonies. Harvasting of crops; sugar and cotton was very hard work. Labour was in short supply in countries such as the Americas and with agricultural machinery not yet available for use everything had yo be done by hand. Shipping of African people began to do the slavery of work for the Europeans in 1833. Many slaves did not survive the trip accross the seas due to the squalid conditions and being packed tight together.
  • Australian Football is Born

    Australian Football is Born
    Australia before the AFL had been founded had no national sport, this was a great way to bring the colonies together. In 1857 Australian Rules football was devised by Tom Wills, his cousin H.C.A. Harrison, W.J. Hammersley and J.B. Thompson. These members founded the Melbourne Football Club on August 7 1858. It wasn't until 1897 that the league of 12 clubs changed to bring in the West Coast Eagle and the Brisbane Bears. Adelaide, Fremantle and Port had all came into the competition by 1997.

    Australia became an independent nation in 1901. The ceromy of this milestone was celebrated on Centennial Park in Sydney. Federal parliament was first based in a lavish ceremony in an Exhibition building in Melbounre. This stayed home to Australia's politics until 1927 when parliament house was moved to Canberra.

    Australian at WW1 (World War 1)
    It was Australia's Prime Minister Joseph Cook and opposition leader Andrew Fisher who lead Australia to the first world war in 1914. For Australia and othe participating countries WW1 still remains a costly war in terms of deaths and casualties. 416, 809 men of Australia's population of fewer than 5 million, over 60,000 died, 156,000 wounded, gassed or taken prisoner.
  • HMAS Sydney defeats SMS Emden

    HMAS Sydney defeats SMS Emden
    It was the first battle won out on sea for our young nation. It alll began when Australia's sea communication were under threat by to large German crusiers in the Indian ocean. The first convoy to leave carried 21,528 men and 7,882 horses on the 1st of November 1914. HMAS Sydney had destroyed all of Emden's guns and by 1100 only one was active. It was then when HMAS Sydney members watched in awe as a fire errupted upon Emden. It was agreed by both sides that Emden's members had showed bravery.

    Introducing of Enlighhtenment
    The impact of Enlightenment was very large. People's ideas were now impacted by their freedom and rationality which charactorised the modern era, no longer superstition and hierarchies of the middle ages. Effects of the Enloghtenment include: making people back up their theroies with logic, the making of democracy with people otherpowering governenments and writing a constitution and scientificical sayings were now being asked as well as religion. This time is disputed to begin between 1650-1701

    As a way of teaching the indigenous population of the time the Victorian's virtute of self - control and fair play. As time went on cricket became a game for the wealthier natives to pay their loyalty to the Bristish empire. In later years cricket was just used to beat the english at their own game
