Election of 1860
What happens in this event is lincoln gets elected president. This is very important because this is what starts the war in a way because it causes controversy. The south doesn't like lincolns point of view on political things, and they decide to secede becuase of this election. A big reason lincoln won the election at all was becuase he was the only one in his political party. There were multiple people in the other political party, therfore splitting the votes for them, and making lincoln win. -
Fort Sumter
This is the first "Battle" in the war. It is important becuase it is the first act that the shows the South is really taking this seriously. The South think they have the right to fort sumter even thouh there are Northern troops stationed there. They take the fort with cannons, and the Norht is forced to retreat becuase they don't have reinforcements becuase they are not on their own turf. This event made the war something that was happening, and the south had to do something about it. -
Bull Run 1
Bull run was the very first battle where both armies marched toward each other till they met in the middle. Stupidly, Northerners gathered to watch the battle. Since the South was more prepared and more trained the North was beat. As the North was beat they retreated into the civilians, and civilians died in the battle. This is important because it shows that the south was not going to pushed around. It also showed that the north wasn't prepared, and that this was going to be a real fight. -
Shiloh
In this battle the north were traveling across country, and they stopped to rest in this peach orchard. It was a big peach orchard, and during the night thee South snuck across and attacked them. The North were pushed back, but after the first night reinforcements came, and the South was pushed back resulting in a North victory. This is important because it was one of the first main victories that the North had. It in consequence increased the chance for the North to win, and increased morale. -
Gettysburg
Gettysburg was a long battle that lasted 3 days with thousands of casualties. It resulted in a victory for the north, and really decided the fate of the war. After this battle it was no longer a question of who would win, rather how long would the South hold out. In this battle the north general was the only person to outsmart Lee. This was probably the most important battle in the civil war history. -
Lincoln's Assassination
A man named John Wilkes Booth feels that the North is wrong in their doings, and that he needs to strike a blow to the north. He assassinates Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theater. He then is able to escape, but there is a huge manhunt for him, and he ends up getting caught and hanged. This is very important because he was a larger than life figure, and he led the country very well. It was a very bad loss the North had to take, and it affected them afterward deeply.
