Franz Ferdinand was assassinated June 28, 1914. The Austrian government blamed the Serbian government for his death. Then Franz Ferdinand's wife declared war on Serbia. -
Germany Declared War on France
Germany declared war on France. German troops went to Belgium. The British secretary Sir Edward Grey sent people to Germany demanding their withdrawal from Belgium. -
Zeppelins
Germans started using aircraft more and more. They moved in on London. When attacking them they used smaller balloons against the Western front. They were stopped when the introduction of planes was introduced. -
Battle of Verdun
Lots of men were lost in the battle. The Germans attacked the French at Verdun to bleed them dry. This battle continued for nine months. -
Battle of Jutland
German and British ships met once again. German ships did a lot of damage to the British ships before the withdrawal. Even though Germans did a great amount of damage on the British ships they thought it was better to keep the fleet on the harbor. -
Battle of the Somme
The German line was to destroy the barbed wire fences on the German Line. But they only succeeded to making no mans land a mess. Millions of deaths occurred in this five month long battle. -
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
The Russians signed a armistice at Brest Litovsk with Germany. Russia was forced to surrender to Poland, Ukraine and other areas. They also had to pay 300 million roubles to Germany. -
United States Declared war on Germany
The German U-boats sunk millions of US ships. This kept us from being able to ship goods back and forth. So since they did that the US declared war on Germany. -
Armistice with Turkey
The allies pushed the Turkey army back. This forced them to ask for an Armistice. The Armistice allowed them to enter the Dardenelles. -
Armistice was signed
The Armistice was signed. It was signed in the French town of Redonthes. This then brought then end to the war.
