Yamamoto is Killed
US code breakers decrypt a Japenese radio message saying that the Admiral of their Navy, Yamammoto, is flying to the Solomon Islands. US fighters intercept his plane and shoot him down. -
US Ships Repaired
The US navy announces that they have completed repairs on almost all warships sunk in the attacks on Pearl Harbor. These ships have returned to their fleets in the Pacific. -

Axis powers controlled the islands of Sicily, just off the mainland of Italy. This was a major starting point in the fight to overthrow Mussolini. -
