May 10th: Churchill becomes Prime Minister of Britain;
October: British victory in Battle of Britain forces Hitler to postpone invasion plans. -
Germany Attacks
Ended May 10th: 'The Blitz' was a German bombing against Britain's major cities;
June 22nd: Hitler begins the Operation Barbarossa, also known as the invasion of Russia;
December 7th: Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. After the attack, the US joined the war to fight against Japan. -
Germany's Setbacks and Mass Murders
February 15th: Singapore falls to the Japanese and around 25,000 become prisoners;
23rd August: Germany suffers setbacks at Stalingrad and El Alamein. This was the most major confrontation, in which Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control over the city of Stalingrad;
In the summer: Mass murder of Jewish people at Auschwitz begins. -
Surrenders and Fights
February 2nd: Surrender at Stalingrad marks Germany's first major defeat;
October 13th: Italy surrenders, but Germany takes over the battle;
British and Indian forces fight the Japanese in Burma. -
Liberation
June 6th: D-Day. The Allied invasion of France.
August 25th: Paris is liberated from Nazi occupation;
Unknown date: Guam liberated by the US Okinawa, and Iwo Jima island (controlled by the Japanese) is bombed. -
Hitler Admits Defeat
January 27th: Auschwitz liberated by Soviet troops;
Unknown date: Russian troops reach Berlin;
April 22nd: Hitler is defeated;
August 6th: After atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki;
August 14th: Japan surrenders.
