The “axis” binding Rome and Berlin was an alliance formed in 1936 between Italy and Germany. The alliance was created by Italy’s foreign minister Galeazzo Ciano linking the two countries on October 25, 1936. It became definite with the Pact of Steel in 1939. The Axis Powers later included Japan as well. -

At the beginning of World War II, Romania officially became neutral in the war, however because of the fall of Britain and France, the two countries they relied on most, they joined the Axis Powers in hopes of gaining more territory. Romania also joined the invasion of the Soviet Union by providing equipment, troops, and oil. -
