Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. -

Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The U.S. warned Japan, but when Japan didn't answer, an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people. Many died after the bomb because of the radiation as well. Three days later, a second B-29 dropped another A-bomb on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people. -
United Nations formed
Representatives of 26 nations at war with the Axis powers met in Washington to sign the Declaration of the United Nations, promising to use their full resources against the Axis and agreeing not to make a separate peace.
