The Long March was a military retreat from Jiangxi to Shaangxi by the communist party and the communist party leader, Mao Zedong to avoid the nationalist party, the Kuomingtang. It led to Mao's ascent to power. -
Germany invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
A non-aggression pact was made with Germany and Russia saying they carve up Poland between them. Germany wanted to expand territorially. Germany had already gotten control of Austria and Czechoslovakia without much of a fight. Germany then attacked Poland thinking no one would stop them liike with the other countries -they were wrong. France and Great Britian then declared war on Germany. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
Japan was at war with China and the war was using up their resources. The U.S. did not support Japan's aggression in China so they refused to supply them with materials. Japan had to find another way to get resources so they decided they wanted the Dutch East Indies. They would attack Pearl Harbor to prevent the U.S. from intervening until they could conquer the Dutch East Indies- their idea of the best place to gain resources. -
United Nations formed
The United Nations was formed to stop full out war from occurring again and becuase of the failure of the League of Nations. Members of the League realized that a collaborative organization would work, but things needed to be changed so it was a better representation of the powers involved. -
Germany surrenders
Most of Germany was in the hands of the Allies because the Allies had control of the sky. Anything could be attacked from the air. Also, nearly all of their materials were gone.Much of Germany were destroyed including the factories, cities, and most importantly, the rail system. -
Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The Allies used a newly created atomic bomb that they tested in New Mexico was dropped in the naval ports of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Beforehand, the Allies sent a letter to the Japanese warning them they were going to attack with atomic bombs with no response. After the bomb was dropped, the ground temperature was 7,000 degrees with 980 MPH winds and 20,000 tons of TNT released. 62,000 buildings were destroyed, 70,000 people were killed immediately and 140,000 people were dead by 1945
