    World Fair
    A worldwide fair took place in New York City promising a new world of futuristic technology and wealth. 206,000 people from around the world gathered to hear FDR give the opening speech for the fair. The fair happened to be held on the same day as George Washington's inaguration.

  • Mentally disabled Gassed

    Mentally disabled Gassed
    On the first of May Germany decides to capture then gas all of the mentally and physically disabled. They did this for over two years and killed about 200,000 to 250,000 Germans. This was known as Action T4.

  • Einstein Warns Roosevelt

    Einstein Warns Roosevelt
    Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner, and Edward Teller, were three European scientists who fled the nazis and then persuaded Albert Einstein to warn the U.S. that Germany was creating a nuclear weapon. Einstein then writes letter to FDR describing what the three scientists told him and the threat Germany is posin.

    WWII Begins
    Germany invades Poland and by doing so starting WWII. The day before, German soldiers had been staged as polish military. It made the invasion easier with people on the inside, this way they could easily attack the radio station in the Silesian city of Gleiwitz. image

    Britain forms a commitee to study the feasibility of a nuclear weapon. They did this so they could hopefully create a weapon that could challenge Germany's weapon. They also wanted to try and understand exactly what germany was doing by making a commitee.

    Persident Roosevelt creates the National Defense Research Commitee to study the feasibility of a nuclear weapon. The council would study nuclear technology then figure out a way to put that technology into a weapon.

  • NDRC Created

    NDRC Created
    President Roosevelt creates the "National Defense Research Committee", which later becomes the Office of Scientific Research and Development. The NDRC was created to mobilize the nstion's scientists and engineers to workfor the war effort, this was also eighteen months before Pearl Harbor. Thsi is later known as the Manhatten Project. They sponsored the development of radars, medicines, electronics, computing, and other technologies.

    Battle of the Beams
    The Battle of the Beams was when the Germans started the blitz on London. This was when night bowmbing had just been introduced as well as radio navigation jamming. They used the jamming when they were bombing, but eventually Germany gave up.

    Cavity Magnetron Comes to US
    The Tizard Mission was a British delegation that brought technology to the States during WWI. They did this in order to obtain the industrial resources to exploit the military potential of the research and development work completed by the UK up to the beginning of World War II. During this time they brought the "cavity magnetron" to the US.

    The Rad. Lab.located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts and functioned from October 1940 until December 31, 1945. MIT Radiation Laboratory opens to research microwave radar based on British magnetron technology.

    Breaking the Codes
    The Enigma machine was a device first commonly used in the 1920s. With a series of mechanical and electrical systems, each keystroke pressed on its keyboard was transformed into a letter using one algorithm, while the subsequent keystroke was derived into another letter with yet another algorithm.British start to regularly break German militairy's enigma codes.

    First gassing of prisoners at Auschwitz. Auschwitz was one of the six concentration camps that the nazis ran during WWII, it was considered the worst. Auschwitz was also located in Poland.

  • Germany Abandons its Nuclear Weapons Program

    Germany abandons its project to develop nuclear weapons, the allies are also unaware of this. Hitler refers to physics as "the Jewish science," due to the large number prominent German Jewish physicists, which are now mostly in exile.
  • War Department Takes Over Manhatten Project

    U.S. Army General Leslie Groves is put in charge of the program. Groves selects Robert Oppenheimer to be the project's scientific director.
  • Atomic Pile "Goes Critical"

    An atomic pile assembled in Chicago by Manhatten Project scientists Enrico Fermi and Aurther Compton "goes critical," demonstrating that it can produce both energy and the new element plutonium.
