Archduke Franz Ferninand Assassinated
On June 28th 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was the heir to Austria-Hungary's throne, and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip while the two were visiting Sarajevo. The events that occured on this day left Austria-Hungary in a very aggravated state. Just one short month later they were the first to enter what would be known as The Great War. Link 1

Woodrow Wilson announces the U.S. will remain neutral.
President Woodrow Wilson announced that the United States would remain neutral. We wanted to stay neutral because we are a country of imagrants and we felt strongly about the war, and on the other hand we believed that we could benefit economically by selling food and supplies to the European countries at war. The neutrality last about three years. Link 1

RMS Lusitania is sunk by German U-Boat The U-20
On May 7th of 1915 the British ocean Liner RMS is sunk by a German U-boat, to be more specific the U-20. The ship had sunk after the second hit in 18 minutes. Of the many killed there was 128 Americans which sparked protests back in the United States and would be a deciding factor that sent the United States to war. Link 1

Italy enters the war
On May 23rd, 1915 Italy had declared war on Germany and Austria. They got a deal from Britain in The Treaty of London, which stated that had offered Italy large sections of territory in the Adriatic Sea region, which of course was a deal that Italy could not resist so when Italy entered the war it entered the war on the side of the Allies. By the end of the war in 1918, around 600,000 Italians were dead, 950,000 were wounded and 250,000 were crippled for the remainder of their days.

British intercept the Zimmerman Telegram
On January 19th of 1917 the British intercept a coded message from Germany to Mexico. The message basically stated that Germany wanted to revive its unrestricted submarine warfare, and it also offered territory from the United States if Mexico were to declare war on the United States, when the American public found out about the issue they were in outrage. This message had made the American people feel like the war had extended its grasp across the pond, to close to the United States.

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare started by Germans
Beginning February 1st, 1917 Germany had started unrestricted submarine warfare against any ship that had entered a so-called "war-zone". This tactic used by the Germans was supposed to be so shocking and spectacular that America specifically would stay neutral. The Germans were warned to stop by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915, this would be one of the few reasons that America went to war. Link 1

The United States declares war on Germany.
The United States declares war on Germany after Germany violated its pledge to suspend unrestricted submarine warfare in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, also its attempts to create alliance with Mexico against the United States.

Alvin York recieves the call of duty
At some point in June of 1917 Alvin C York recieved his draft notice letting him know it was his time to come to the war. He had tried to evade the war by saying that it was against his religion. The US gov told him he would be fighting the evil in the world and he reluctantly agreed to go. Link 1

Battle of Caporetto
Battle of Caporetto occurred between October 24, 1917 to November 12, 1917. The battle had a few names including Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, the Battle of Kobarid or the Battle of Karfreit as it was known by the Central Powers. The main thing to get about this battle was that the Italians lost by a long shot. Link 1

Red Baron Shot Down
On April 21st German flying ace, Baron Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron) was shot down. The Red Baron was shot down and killed over Vaux-sur-Somme, France. Though it is still under controversy it is likely that Captain Arthur Roy Brown (Canadian WWI Flying Ace) had fired the shot that brought him down. Link 1

US Soldier Alvin York at Meuse-Argonne offensive
On October 8th 1918, United States Corporal Alvin C. York reportedly killed over 20 German soldiers and managed to capture an additional 132 in the Argonne Forest near the Meuse River in France. The events that took place later earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor. Link 1
