    The start of the war
    After the war people debated how it started. The reason the war started was when Archduke Franz Ferdinand. In June of 1914, he and his wife traveled to Bosnia. They survived a bomb thrown at them but were shot by Gavrillo Princip at point-blank range. Austria was furious and declared war.

    Russia Mobilizes
    Russia has an ally which is Serbia. Russia has a big and strong army and is going against Austria. This action from Russia started a domino effect that leads to European powers to outbreak. This played a big part in the war because they made the first move and lead to other countries teaming up.

    The German army tried to capture Paris by passing through neutral countries. They wanted free passage through Belgium. Belgium wanted to stay neutral and they refused. Then german troops attacked Belgium. that made Belgium join the allies. The small Belgium army was not enough for the German army. Then Belgium retracted and Germany took Paris.

    During WW1 around Christmas day. the sounds of rifles firing and shells exploding faded in a lot of places. Along the western front, there was no noise in favor of holiday celebrations in the trenches. This showed gestures of goodwill between enemies. On Christmas eve many german and British troops sang Christmas carols to each other across the lines.

    Germans fired at allied lines with shells filled with chlorine gas. This is the first time that in battle large amounts of gas were used. This lead to the near collapse of the french lines. In the end, the Germans still didn’t take advantage of the breach. More than 1,000 killed as a result of this gas.

    When the United States entered World War I, First Lieutenant Elliott Lee was a recent graduate of Princeton, and hoped to contribute to the war effort by becoming an officer in the Army but at 6 foot, four and a half inches tall, he exceeded the maximum height for Officer Candidate School by half an inch. He was advised to join the U.S. Army Ambulance Corps, which had units soon to depart for France to be attached to the French Army.

    the Zimmermann telegram was the thing that pushed the US over the edge. the British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German foreign minister Arthur Zimmermann. it was meant to go to Mexico offering US territory to Mexico in return for joining them. this message helped draw the US into the war which changed the course of history.

    the US joined their allies- Britain, France, and Russia to fight in WW1. The US was under command of John J Pershing. More than 2 million US soldiers fought on battlefields in France. A lot of Americans did not like the idea of the US joining the war and wanted to remain neutral. A big help in this was women. They helped a lot and played a big part in the war.

    Only six weeks after the US entered WW1 the US congress passed the selective service act. This act gave the president at the time the power to draft soldiers. They needed fresh troops to relieve their exhausted men on the battlefields of the western front. There were about 100,000 men who were not trained or equipped for that kind of fighting.

    The battle of Cantigny
    This battle was the first sustained American offensive of the war. It wasn't a big battle but made a big impact. It was fought on the second day of the great German offensive comprising the third battle of the aisne. American First division captured the village of Cantigny. there were about 4,000 in the first division. They were under Major General Robert Lee Bullard.

    End of the war
    WW1 officially ended with the signing of the treaty of Versailles. It was negotiated among the allied powers with little participation in Germany. It has 15 parts and 440 articles which reassigned german boundaries. Germany agreed to pay for reparations. Germany as to blame for this war.
