    First Battle of the Marne

    Germans wanted to get rid of France before turning to Russia. They tried but didn’t have enough troops to keep momentum in France. They retreated and wasted time and Russia mobilized faster than Germans thought. The battle ended in a German victory, but the loss in the West meant the war would not be fast but extended.

    Training Camps
    Rollin Jack Grace went to Albany to get training. He also went to Jersey and Long Island. He said he needed the training so he could get sent down to the Mexican border. He went into training pretty much right after he got in. He found one of his best buds in the Albany camp and they got along well until he went back home.

    The Gallipoli Campaign

    This attack was supposed to be able to allow ships to capture Constantinople and went on fore many months. It would knock the Ottoman Turkey out of the war. It was a tough-fought battle between Allied forces, including Australian and New Zealand troops, and the Ottoman Empire. They thought that the Ottomans wouldn’t be able to hold ground. The British and Anzacs both tried to go forward but never could and could no longer advance and ended up being a stalemate.

    The Battle of Verdun

    This was the longest battle of World War I and was one of the costliest. It cost over a billion dollars and lasted 8 months. It started with an attack on Verdun and would continue for around a year. The French were able to hold them off even though it was a surprise. Germans had to hold back on them as the British and Russians had troops sent out elsewhere.

    The Battle of Jutland

    Was the biggest naval battle of World War I and this was between the British and Germans. The Germans wanted to try and weaken the Royal Navy by ambushing them in the North Sea. Germans were in the hope of destroying Jellioce before Betty showed up. They were warned by the codebreakers and were able to put enough force out early so they were prepared.

    Mexican Border
    Rollin Jack Grace would go on lots of patrols on the Mexican border. They slept outside and had to watch for each other's backs because they would get ganged up on. Also, they had to carry around guns all the time so they could defend themselves if the Mexicans showed up. Got into a lot of fights and was a very rough climate.

    Brusilov Offensive

    This was one of the most successful operations in World War I. It was named after Aleksei Bruslivo which is who led it. The same tactics were used that were used in the Western Front and that proved to work. He used a strong attack that was fast and added to the element of surprise and that is why it was so successful.

    The Battle of the Somme

    This war was joint between the British and the French. Their goal was to achieve victory over the Germans in the Western Front. This war would be the most painful episode of the war. This war would also mark the bloodiest day in Britain's military history.
  • Battle in the Islands

    Battle in the Islands
    Rollin Jack Grace would have to go to islands to stop trouble and fight down by the Mexico Border. Spent a couple of days fighting down on the islands. Had to take boats out to the islands. The battle down there lasted a few days just so they could clear it out and gain control.

    Third Ypres Campaign

    The battleground area around Ypres was the key to the war. The British were surrounded and the enemies that had high ground around them. The plan was to get out of the bad position and take over a rail junction. If the plan worked then he wanted to attack the German submarine base at Bruges.

    Return Home
    Jack Rollin Grace returned home and was a policeman in Woodmen and at Rutland. He would go down West Street if he wanted to pick a fight. He got into a lot of fights as a policeman and he loved it. He liked the stress and liked being physical.

    German Spring Offensive

    Was a big attack by Germany in the war. They wanted to break the stalemate on the Western Front. It had some success at the start but didn’t achieve its goals. It didn’t change the outcome of the war in the end.
  • Prison Guard

    Prison Guard
    Jack Rollin Grace was also a guard and did guard work in a prison. He had to deal with a lot of fights there. One time he got chipped by a punch and had to have some help. Also met another former military in the prison and became close friends with him.

    Battle of Amiens

    It was a joint offensive by the Allies. The goal was to break through German lines and advance towards Amiens. The battle was a success. It marked the beginning of the Hundred Day Offensive which led to the end of the war.

    Battle of Megiddo

    It was part of the larger Sinai and Palestine Campaign. The British launched a successful offensive against the Ottoman Empire. They managed to break through the defensive lines and got victory. The battle played a significant role in the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
