When WWI broke out US declared neutrality, meaning it would take no sides, that it would maintain traiding right with countries on both powers. Sending an issue with Great Britain & the Germans created a blockade and attacked US mercahnt ships. -

Sinking of Lusitania
German Walter Schwieger captain of the submarine U-20, sank the British RMS Lusitania, by firing a torpedo on it’s starboard side, which was followed by another explosion which was larger than the first one. The Lusitania sank within 20 minutes. Not many survived. -

Pancho Villa led an army across the border to stage a brutal raid in the small town of Columbus, NM. Killing 19 people, and leaving the town in flames. -

Zimmermann Note
Foreign Secretary of German Empire, Arthur ZImmermann sent a coded telegram to the ambassador of Mexico to enter the conflict of the event, but the note was intercepted and decoded by the British intelligence. It outraged the American public and help generate support for the US to declare war against Germany. -
