Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
Austria had some of the Slav people on their land, and Serbia wanted the Slav people. Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of Austria-Hungary. He was assassinated by Serbian, Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Back Hands. -
Austria Declares War
Following the assassination of the Archduke, war is declared. Serbia is blamed for the assassination, because the Black Hands are from Serbia. Austria declares war on Serbia. -
Germany Declares War
On the day of the assassination of the Archduke, Russia moved there troops to the countries border. They were still in Russia, but the Germans didn't like it. The Germans didn't like the mobilization, so war was declared on Russia. -
Germany Declares War Again
Two days after the declaration of war on Russia. Germany declares war once more. This time it is on Russia's ally, France. -
Britain Declares War
After Germany declared war on France, the German armies wanted to sneak up on France. Instead of crossing the border that Germany and France had, they stormed through Belgium and into France. Belgium was a neutral country and had nothing to do with the war. This attack angered Britain, so they declared war on Germany. -
Unofficial Christmas Truce
The war had been increasingly bloody since the start 4 months ago. Since the soldiers couldn't go home, family and friends sent them packages to make their Christmas special. The opposing troops agreed to cease fire so Christmas could be celebrated. For some this truce ended midnight on Christmas day, and for others it went through New Year's Eve. -
War Zone Declared
Great Britain is declared a war zone by Germany. A submarine blockade was established. Neutral merchant ships were considered a threat and a possible target. -
Zimmerman Telegram
This is a telegram sent to Mexico from Germany. Germany sends this telegram to try and get Mexico involved in the war. However, Britain intercedes and decodes the telegram. -
Treaty of Brest Litovsk
This treaty was signed by Russia. It declared peace between Russia and the Central Powers. Russia was officially out of the war, but the war wasn't over. -
War Over
This day marks the official Cease Fire of WWI. The globe was able to be semi peaceful again. Factories were converted back and rations were lifted.
