Archduke franz ferinand and his wife were assasinated on June 28, 1914. They were both in a car when they were shot and killed. Many attempts to kill them had happened before. This was one of the causes of WWI. -

Start of war
Russia begins to move their army against Austria-Hungary. This leads to many other European power to start to move. The event that actually seen as the start of the war was when Germany began to invade Belgium. -
Germans using gas in battle
Germans began to use bullets filled with deadly gas against the French. This is the first time that gas had been used during war. Even though the German had a their new weapons the French did not back down. -
Lusitania sinks
A German submarine sinks the RMS Lusitania, over a thousand people were killed. This was a big loss to the British this boat was a key item for traveling and transporting goods. Germany later banned unrestricted submarine warfare. Many of the people that dies on this boat were american, this enraged the US. -
U.S enters the war
The U.S wanted to remain neutral but many people were being killed. So congress finally declares war against Germany. Siding with France and Britain. Almost 2 Million U.S soldiers battled in France. -
Selective service act
The US congress passed the selective service act or also known as the selective draft act. This required men of age to be randomly picked and drafted into the army. This increased the size of the US army. This act was later cancelled after the war was over. -
First tanks
The British use the first ever tanks in battle. The idea of tanks came from farming machines that were used during this time. The tanks brought mobility to the western front. -
Germany and Russia peace treaty
The Germans finally decide to sign a peace treaty with Russia. This treaty is known as The treaty of Brest- Litovsk. This ended Russia's participation in the war. -
Battle of Cantigny
This battle was big for the Americans because they made a big move by capturing the village of Cantigny next to the Somme river. The Germans ha recently had control of this area. This was the first major US victory in the war. -
Battle of Belleua woods begins
This battle starts when US marine corps attack Germans in a open field. This was one of the most violent battles in the war. The marine corps became very well known because they cleared the woods of Germans after the land was exchanged almost 6 times.
