Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia. He was next in line for the Austro-Hungarian throne. The killings set off decades old tensions in Europe and started WWI. -
Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
After Archduke was killed by a Seberban man, Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia. With the help of Germany, Austria-Hungary gave Serbia a list of demands. Serbia refused to follow. In return, Austria-Hungary declared war. -
First use of gas as a weapon by the Germans
Germany decided to bring gas as a weapon to the battlefield. Not long after, Allies started using poisonous gas and carried gas mask to protect themselves. New weapons like this, was a huge advantage to the Germans. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
The Lusitania was attacked by a German U-boat in 1915 due to a disbelief by the Germans that the ship had weapons on it. It was later found out that the ship did have weapons on it. Yet, before that due to propaganda and secrecy the blame was on Germany. -

Woodrow Wilson was a democrat who defeated against Charles Evan Hughes in the 1916 quadrennial reelection. After he was elected he tried really hard to help America remain neutral. He even developed a campaign slogan that says, "He kept us out of war". -

U.S declares War
After months of neutrality, President Woodrow Wilson finally request a declaration of war against Germany. The U.S. then later declared war on one of Germany's allies, Austria-Hungary. -
Bolsheviks led by Lenin overthrow Russian government
In November of 1917, the founder of the Bolshevik Party, Vladimir Lenin, led a revolt against the ineffective provisional government and caused it to be overthrown. -
War Ends
On November 11, 1918 at 11 a.m., World War I known as the "war to end all wars" ends. Germany signs an armistice agreement with allies outside of Compiegne, France. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was signed making it the most important peace treaty to bring World War I to an official end and making Germany accept the blame for starting the war.
