This ignited from a conflict between Chinese and Japanese troops over control of the Chinese mainland. Japan took its troops to a railroad from Manchuria to Korea which then causes the Japanese to attack Chinese troops, resulting in Japans control over Manchuria.

Rape of Nanking
In 1937, Japanese troops entered the Chinese city of Nanking and seized it within days. However, the events that occurred are shrouded in mystery and controversy due to incomplete and opinionated records. Even with these uncertainties, almost all of the sources point to horrible atrocities and violence occurring in Nanking during this time.
