Start of the Space Race
On October 4 the Soviet R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile launched Sputnik. This kicked off the space race though the Soviet's beat the US to have something orbit earth the U.S. were the first to land on the moon which ended the space race. Later the U.S. landed on the moon and that ended the space race. -
Sputnik
Sputnik was launched by the Soviets to kick off the space race. They beat us to have it orbit the earth a total of 1,440 times. The U.S. did strike back though and landed someone on the moon. -

Sputnik II was only the second spacecraft ever to orbit space. The thing that was really crazy about Sputnik II was the in it was Laika the dog. Laika was expected to and did die because we didn't know how a living organism would react to space. Laika was expected to live longer than she did though she was expected to live for 10 days but only lived for 2. -

The U.S sent a United States U-2 Spy Plane out into Soviets airspace. It was shot down by the Soviets. After it was shot down the pilot Francis Gary. The only death was a friendly fire shot by the Soviets. -

Cuban exiles were trained by the CIA. They were also aided by the US government attempted to invade Cuba and overthrow the Communist government of Fidel Castro. This attempt was failed. -
Berlin Wall
The Communist government of East Germany started to build a wall covered in barbed wire. It was a huge concrete wall with metal bases in the middle to help it stay standing and to top t all of it was just covered all over with barbed wire. It still is and will always be a huge symbol of the cold war. -

This was the last little parts of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Cuba was about aiming there stuff at the Soviets. The Cuba Missile Crisis was a very scary time for the whole world. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a period between Oct 16-28. During this period the U.S. and the Soviet Union were about to destroy each other with nuclear weapons. If they were to do this it is very possible that they could have destroyed the entire earth. -

JFK was killed during his visit to Dallas in a parade. JFK was killed on live tv and was one of the most gruesome things ever shown on live tv. The killer Lee Harvey was arrested for murder but was thought to not be a lone killer. -

On July 20, 1969 the U.S. made world history by being the first country to have a man step foot on the moon. This was a huge deal because this gave the U.S. the lead in the Cold War. This also ended the space race with a U.S. victory. -

Jimmy Carter became the 39th president of the US. Carter was the next president after the assassination of JFK. Carter was going to help handle the cold war but never did as well as JFK -
End of the Cold War
The Soviet Union came to an end and that was the end of the cold war as well. The US finally won the Cold War and ended the Soviet Union. The Russia recognized the the Soviet Union had come to an end. -
Non-Proliferation Treaty
The NPT treaty was a very big deal because it stopped the scary thought of the world ending from all of the nuclear weapons that the U.S. and the Soviets had. The U.S. and the Soviets had enough nuclear weapons that the world could have ended. We could have created a nuclear winter.
