In 1943 Mao Zedong and the Communist Party marched away from the attacks by the Guomingdang. 87,000 soldiers started the retreat and walked for about 40 days. -
Germany invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
Hitler had already planned to attack Poland and in 1939 he did. After France and Great Britain decalre war on Germany. Poland loses before France and Great Britain can help. Hitler then annexed the Western half of Poland. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941 in the early morning the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The US knew it was coming but didn't know where. 2,300 Americans died, over 1,100 wounded. 19 ships were damaged and 8 of those were battle ships. -
Germany surrenders
In may of 1945 Germany surrenders in WWII. The Soviets launched a counter-attack that would slowly drive the Nazis back to Germany and the allies trapped Germnay. German forces broke through Americans lines in the Ardennes but eventually were outpowerd with the Soviets from the east. -
Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
In August-September of 1945 under the manhattan project the allies had created an atomic bomb. They warned Japan they would drop it if they didn't surrender and Japan didn't respond. First in Hiroshima, where 70000-80000 people died. Next, 3 days later over 70,000 were killed in Nagasaki. -
United Nations formed
In 1945 the United Nations were formed to replace the League of Nations. This was mostly created so there wouldn't be a 3rd world war.
