One major reason this attack was successful is because the Germans weren't expecting an attack that was southbound, and also weren't expecting an attack due to the extreme weather conditions.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, (see "Pearl Harbor" event on timeline) the United States needed to hit Japan with atomic reinforcements. though the United States released the attacks of Hiroshima and Nagasaki much later in the war this attack hit Japan so hard that it wiped out 80,000 Japanese citizens. and thousands of others died due to radiation exposure.
