    WWI Started after the assassination of Archduke Franz on June 28th, 1914. Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (Central powers) were fighting against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, and the United States (Allied Powers). The war lasted 4 years from 1914 to 1918. And at least 37 million lives were taken.

    Russians were defeated at the battle of Tannenberg, On the Eastern front Germans shatter Russian Second army and take over 92,000 Prisoners. On August 30th Germans Conduct air raid on Paris the attack had little military value more intended for Civilians.

    Even though Russia lost the war against Germany they made German move two crops from the western front to the eastern front, and helping with the lost of German in the Battle of Marne. With the work of Russia huge war machines ensured a longer war and not a quick win for Germany.

    John was the caption of the Army (Medical services). He served in WWI. John served in the 33rd Illinois national guard division. His services in WWI were Medical officers reverse corp, 108th santairty training, and ambulance corp.

    John and his brother had signed up for the war for personal reason. On November 6,1915. John and His brother names were in the newspaper and on November 16,1915. Would have to go to camp.

    “It was hard during WWI not only for the men fighting or us doctors and nurse but also for our families back home. They were worried not knowing if we were coming home” John Stated. Many families back home were worried about the men fighting and their loved ones they would send letters back and fourth to each other. I think they wanted their moms not to worry to much about them and just to tell them that they were fine.

    Jan, 4, 1917 Not a lot was known about John service between December 1916 and February 1917, Except on January 4th they did know that he was one of the many injured on the post in Wellington.

    On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson, Went to congress with a request of declaration of war against Germany, Woodrow said Germany was in violation of its pledge to suspend unrestricted submarines warfare. Were some of his reasons on why the United States should enter the war, on April 4, 1917 The US senate voted to support the measure on the War against Germany. Germany also attacked a US ship carrying passenger that also motivate Wilson to enter the War.

    On April 6, 1917 two years after the war had started the United States had joined the War under the command of Major General John J. Pershing. Many Americans did not want the US to enter the war and wanted to remain “Neutral” however the U.S did enter the war with over 2 million soldiers.

    In November 1917 Russia had backed out of the war, Many of Russia's army had “laid down their arms” but many still fought, The “treaty of Brest Litovsk” was there last battle of War World 1. A group of Communists overthrow Russia Government in November 1917 and created a Communists government and wanted to pull Russia from the war on the other hand Germany had to pull their Men from Russia land and on March 7th 1918 Russia was officially out of WW1.

    By the end of 1917 the Bolsheviks had gained power in Russia and immediately trying to set peace with Germany, They wanted no more war or angry with them and just wanted to set peace, by the end of the war 11 million military personnel and roughly about 7 million civilians died. A lot more military and civilians died as the war went on for roughly another year.

    World War 1 was known for the war, “ War to end all wars” but the quickly went to waste after The treaty of Versailles of 1919 forced punishment on Germany which then laid the groundwork for World War 2. Also World War 1 ended on November 11, 1918 at 11 AM when Germany signed the agreement Britain and France wrote.

    John got married in WW1 on the Grantham base on the 18th of December 1918, then Marched back in Torquay in January 1919 but by then Germany had already signed the “Treaty of Versailles”.
