    The triple entente aka. the allies consisted of France,Britain, and Russia. The triple alliance had Germany,Austria-Hungary,and Italy. Geramny and Austria-Hungary later joined the Ottoman empire to become the central powers.

    Consisted of Germany,AUstria-Hungary, together with the Ottoman Empire- Mostly middle Eastern lands controlled by the turks. They provided a level of international security because nations were reluctant to disturb the balance of power.

    He was heir to the Austrian throne- visited the Bosnian capital Sarajevl. As the royal entourage drove thrrough the city, Serbian nationalist, Garvrilo Princip stepped from the crowd and shot him and his wife, Sophia. The assasination touched off a diplomatic crisis. Austria-Hungary declared a short war against Serbia.

    This plan was a stragedy that helped Germany invade Belguim. This planned called for holding actio against Russia, combined wirth a quick drive through Belgium to Paris after France had fallen. the two German armies defeated Russia, thousands of people fled in terror.

    Sinking of British liner, Lusitania
    A U-boat sinkked Lusitania off the southern coast of Ireland. Of the 1,198 persons,128 were Americans. The Germans defended their action on the ground that the liner carried ammunition. America became outraged with Germany because of loss of life and American public opinion turned against Germany and The Central Powers.

    A U-boat sinked The Arabic drowning 2 Americans. Again Americans protested and this time Germany agreed not to sink anymore passenger ships.

    Germany broke its promise and torpedoed an unamrmed French Passenger Steamer.The Sussex sunk and about 80 passengers wer killedor injured, including Americans. Once again,the U.S warned that they would break off diplomatic relations unless Gemany changed their tactic. Again Germany agreed, but there was a conditon: if the U,S could not persuade Britain to lift its blockade against food and fertilizers, Germany would consider renweing unrestricted submarine warfare.

    The British suffered 60,000 casualties in the first day and finalcasualties totalled 1.2 million. Yet only 7 miles of ground changed hands. This bloody trench warfare lasted 3 years. Elsewhere the fighting was just as devastaing and inconclusive.
