    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand took place in a royal open car when a terrorist group killed him and his wife in seconds. The Austrians blamed Serbia for plotting the assassination.

    In opposition to the Entente Alliance there was the Central Powers which was Austria Hungary, Germany and Italy. This made Europe pre dominated by two armed camps. Russia and france feared germanys powers because they were neighbours.

    Australian and New Zealand troops disembark to Egypt before being sent to where many troops hadn’t heard of- Turkey. They were trained and getting prepared by the British leaders. Many troops wanted to fight at this stage.

    The battle in Gallipoli was a failed campaign. The Australian, New Zealand, French and British troops were allies. The ANZAC cove was very dangerous, 12000 troops died over the first 10 days of the battle.

    Verdun was a historic fortrress guarding France's eastern boarder, to loose it would be fearful. The french goverment defended at all costs. The germans died as the french had the adventage of machine guns. The germans called of their attack. The French and German had equal numbers, neither side has an adventage.

    Battle of the Somme
    The German and British were at war along the river Somme. It was a joint French and British attack and ran for 4 and a half months. The British Forces had the main role in the war as the french forces were delayed at the Battle of Verdun.

    This is important to the war because it was the main allied attack on the German Western Front during 1916 one third of British troops were killed on the first day of battle.

    This battle was against a strong German Position. The battle was intended to move german troops away from the Somme battle, to help the allies at the Somme.The attack was a failure as the Germans realised very quickly that is was a trick to get them to leave the Somme.

    Australian leaders raised the issue of having a conscription to become stricter on the volenteers. The issue was put to the Australian people as a referendum.

    Battle of passchendale which is also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. This campaign was known for the amound of casualties in the mud. It was the heaviest rain in 30 years. The rain caused reifles and tanks to clog and many deaths of men and horses from drowning.
