-Trench warfare was used since neither side was able to overtake the other due to the large capacity of the armies Historical Singnigicance:
-This was the first time in history that trench warfare was used in such a huge capacity of soldiers -

-The schlieffen plan was used, in which Germany tried to flank France from the north by going through Belguim Ethical Dimension:
-It was wrong for the Germans to go through Belguim without their permission -

-During that time armies would not fight during winter due to the cold weather and since the holidays were coming up during the time Historical Perspecive:
-Armies would not fight during the time and they would celebrate christmas and remember the soldiers who fought by them -

-For the first time poison gas was introduced by germany, this was not anticipated and it led to many casualties Continuity and change:
-Poison gas has changed alot over time

Historical Significance:
-It was a great and embarrasing loss for the allies and a great victory for the other side Continuity and change:
- This battle had alot of involvement with ships and there was alot of sea warfare compared to the previous battles -

-It was the longest battle of WW1, Lasted 303 days
-with an average of 70,000 casualties per month Historical Perspective:
-since they were losing so many men it was very hard for the governments to get replacements for the army -
TURNING POINT:U.S.A joins the war
Historical Significance:
-Even though their damage was minimal, their ability to quickly move such large capacities of soldiers gave the Germans the impression that they were fighting a limitless supply of enemies. Historical Perspective:
-This was a really great asset since it was very hard at the time to transport large armies -
Battle of Somme begins
Historical Significance:
-This was one of the largest battles
-more than 1 million men were injured or killed making it the bloodiest battle in history Continuity and Change:
-This was the first time that the tank was used
-It was a great change in ground warfare -
Germany sends a coded message to mexico to try to get them to join

-This was a secret code, also known as Zimmerman Telegram
-The british figured out the code and Mexico did not get involved in the war Historical Perspective:
-This was a very hard code to dicipher and once it was uncoded U.S.A (which was neutral at the time) came back into the war

Battle of Vimy Ridge begins
Historical Significance:
-In this battle Canada demonstrated outstanding tactics and won the battle Historical Perspective:
-Canada Gained some independance from Britian
-Also this was a very short battle so this was a very great achievement for Canada -
Battle of Passchendaele
Historical Significance:
-This was the bloodiest battle in the least amount of time
-It was a great victory for the allies Cause and effect:
-German General Sir Douglas Haig tried to get the advantage over the Allied forces, but he did not predict the weather conditions and failed -
Battle of Cambrai
Historical Significance:
- This battle had a large use of tanks
-The Britians won with thier tactics and plans Cause and Effect:
-The Germans were alot more powerful so the britians launched a surprise attack and successfully flanked the Germans -
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson issues his Fourteen Points speech
Historical Significance:
-He tried to prevent the war from ever happening again with his 14 points of peace
-not only did he want peace, but no alliances which would make disputes between countries only between themselves and not involve other countries in it Cause and Effect:
-Wilson realized that he had to take a different aprroach, since during the time it would be hard to stop them with sheer force -
TURNING POINT:Germany launches the Spring Offensive
Cause and Effect:
Since the Germans had more men and artillery than the Allied forces, they treid to take advantage of it before the United States arrived
-They launched a huge offensive attack and gained lots of land,but loss too many men, and were forced to retreat Historical Perspective:
-The Germans at the time thought that they needed to take advantage, but their plans failed -
TURNING POINT:Allied forces break through the Hindenburg Line
Cause and Effect:
- Now that they lost many men during the spring offense the Germans began constructing the Hidenburg line during the winter Historical Significance:
- The allied forces broke through its northern hinge and caused the Germans to retreat -
Germany signed an armstice with the allies ending WW1
Historical Significance:
- After giving up they finally signed the armistice and the brutal war came to an end Cause and Effect:
-After losing most of thier troops during the spring offense and the Hidenburg line they had no choice but to surrender and sign the treaty
