Ships were used to transport soldiers, food, and other supplies to the front lines. it was very important that the ships did not get attacked. Norman Wilkinson was an artist that came up with the idea of painting the ships with bright shapes and contour lines as a form of camouflage. instead of hiding the ship from enemies it would distract them. -

Generals Banned
Many people outside of the war saw the generals as weak for what they thought was hiding from the front lines. but in fact they were actually banned from “going over the top” they were too valuable to let them fight, losing a general could cost much more. -
Archduke Assassination
the archduke, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated while at a parade in Bosnia. A nationalist from Serbia killed the archduke and his wife because he felt that Bosnia should belong to Serbia instead of Austria-Hungary -
Germans Fire
The German forces shoot bullet shells full of chlorine gas at the allied forces. it was the first time that an abundance of gas was used during battle. as a result of the gas the french lines collapse, but the germans still couldn’t take advantage of the breach. -
Zimmerman Telegram
Germany sends a telegram to mexico requesting for help against the US, in return Germany would get the land back from the US. this telegram was intercepted by the allies. mexico declined the request but the request was enough to inrage the US into declaring war -
Germans Cheating
Germany continues to use their submarines in restricted European waterways. this act lead the US into the war. -
Explosion in France
During the war there were miners that would dig underground tunnels and detonate mines under enemy lines. Miners in Messines Ridge, Belgium detonated 900,000 pounds of explosives all at the same time to destroy the German front line. The British prime minister that was 140 miles away heard the explosion. -
Treaty between Russia and Germany
The treaty gave germany a large amount of land that was Ukraine and Poland, this caused a lot of problems for the French British and Americans. -

12 million letters were brought to the front lines every week. Even during the times of the war, it only took two days for a letter to be delivered from Britain to France.By the time the war ended around two billion letters were received in the trenches.
