Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on June 28, 1914. This event is arguably what sparked World War 1. -
World War 1 Begins
World War 1 began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. During the War, the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire) fought against the Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, and the United States). -
First Battle Of The Marne
(6-10 September 1914) Germany had hoped to avoid fighting on two fronts so they knocked out France before turning to Russia. The French and British launched a counter-offensive move at the Marne, and after several days of fighting, Germany finally retreated. -
Christmas truce
The Christmas truce was when the British and the Germans got together to celebrate the holiday. They would play soccer and they would pass along gifts. They also buried the casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. After 1914 the High Commands on both sides tried to prevent any truces from happening again. -
Lusitania Sinks
On May 7, 1915, the Lusitania sank. A German submarine sank the Lusitania, they feared that the submarine was carrying supplies for the war. -
Biographical information for James E. Hoskins
James was a Quaker farmer who was drafted when he was 24. He was willing to serve his country despite his religious upbringing. When the draft board accepted him, people in the community painted the family's picket fence yellow. -
Battle of Verdun
(February 21-December 18, 1916) It was one of the longest, bloodiest, and most-ferocious battles of the war. About 700,000 casualties were found at the end of the war, including some 300,000 killed. Within the battle, nine villages were destroyed. -

Soldiers and Sailors could enjoy a quiet smoke in the homelike living room, read, write, or have a home-cooked meal for 25 cents. This neighborhood was pretty big considering it was only for soldiers and sailors. -
Battle of Somme
(July 1- November 1, 1916) Known as one of the largest battles of World War 1. On the first day alone, 57,000 casualties were suffered on the British side. At the end of the war, both the Allied and Central powers would lose more than 1.5 million men. -
U.S Enters the War
On April 6, 1917, the U.S Congress authorized a declaration of war against Germany. The U.S joined the allies' side, on the side of France and Britain. -

James was selected for immediate military service, the letter was from the president of the United States. James had to report to the County of Jefferson State of Iowa. -
Battle of Amiens
(8-11, August 1918) The first counter-attacks started on in July, but the battle began on August 8. Gains of 7 miles on that one day- One General described it as ¨black day¨. By November the German Army couldn't fight longer. -
Armistice Day/ Veterans Day
Armistice Day is the anniversary of the armistice of November 11, 1918. The anniversary was later renamed to Veterans Day, as we all know it today. -

Honorable Discharge
James is returning home after WW1. 2nd Lieut. Ord. Dept, V. H. Halperin wrote this letter to James Hoskins's family informing them that he is now on his way home. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was signed at the end of World War 1 by the allied powers. It brought World War 1 to an end, the Treaty also ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers.
