    By 1914, Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Austria and Hungary were the six major powers. They split into two alliances that would form the warring sides in WW1. Austria-Hungary, Italy and Germany, joined in the Triple Alliance, while Russia, France and Britain formed the Triple Entente. These alliances played an important role in hastening Europe's rush to conflict.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand had an immediate impact on the world because his assassination was the event that sparked World War I. At the time Austria-Hungary was ruled by Bosnia. Serbia wanted to take over Bosnia so Austria-Hungary declared for the war.

    The Second Battle of Ypres was one of the three most costly battles in World War One in western Flanders. In this battle the German's marked their first use of poison gas as a weapon in history. The gas attack reached the allies line and made a wide hole, the Germans failed to use it as an advantage. It was also the first time a Canadain division fought in the great war and also defeated a european power.

The first day alone the British forces suffered over 57,000 casualties including more than 19,000 soldiers killed. On western front it was a trench warfare where both sides constructed trenches, underground, and dug out systems opposing each other along a front protected from assault by wire.

The Wartime Elections Act (WTA) gave women the right to vote in the federal election but you had to be relatives of the Canadian troops overseas.

    Battle of Passchendaele also known as the Third Battle of Ypres in WW1. it was described as a muddy, madness and senseless slaughter of the Western Front. It was the third and longest battle to take place at Belgian city of Ypres. The Canadian Corps joined the battle on 26 October, and on 6 November the Canadians captured the ridge.
