From Austria-Hungary, Engaged to Sophie Chotek, called Serbs pigs, thieves, murderers, and scoundrels. Bosnia which was 40% serbs learned that Ferdinand was coming to visit. He was then killed by the black hand. This started the war. -
New Weapons
World War one used a lot of new weapons that were highly effective. There were machine guns, poison gas, submarines, airplanes, and tanks. -
Trench warfare
Trenches were made of wood, and helped protect soldiers from enemy fire. Life in the trenches was rough. People in the trenches sometimes got trench foot and the soldiers were hardly fed. Although conditions were bad the trenches helped protect the soldiers and prevented a lot of casualties. -
Battle of Tannenberg
Fought during the first month of world war one. The Russians at first moved quickly passed the Germans. Later in the battle the Russians began having trouble and could not communicate effectively. The communication issues ultimately ended them and caused them to lose the battle. -
Poison gas
April 22, 1915, The Germans used 150 tons of deadly gas at the french. Two years later in 1914 the Germans used tear gas once again against the french killing a thousand of them. -
Sinking of Lusitania
German boat torpedoed The British steamship on May, 7th 1915. The sinking of the ship caused 1,128 people to die. 128 of the people who died were American. The Germans killed innocent civilians and Broke Naval Rules. -
The battle of Verdun
Largest and longest battle on the western front. German forces claimed Fort Douaumont, but after coming within 2 miles they gave up. The french took back their forts and pushed the line back. -
Zimmerman Telegram
Message from Germany to Mexico that was intercepted by the British. The Germans promised to give Mexico its land back if they sided with Germany. Although Mexico declined, the United States was furious. This rage caused America to enter the war. -
Purple Heart
Received a purple heart for being wounded in war. He was wounded while serving as Sergeant.
