    On June 28, 1914 Franz Ferdinand and Sohie were touring a city called Sarajevo. Suprisingly, they were in an open car and had very little security. At this time, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip of The Black Hand shoots the Archduke and his wife Sophie and kills them.

    Germans start firing shells filled with chlorine gas. This is the very first time that large amounts of gas are used in battle. This works very well for the Germans, well enough to almost collapse the French lines.

    The British recruit the first tanks to be used in war. The tanks are very useful for breaking through barbed wire and clearing a path for the soldiers. Tanks are very new though, and they are not always the decided weapon, as the creators thought.

    Germany begins using submarines for warfare in Europe. This act is one of the reasons why the U.S. joined the war. Using submarines also turns out to be why Germany is defeated.

    Zimmerman Telegram
    President Woodrow Wilson gets a telegram from Germany. In the telegram, Germany proposed that Mexico would join their side in case of war against the U.S. Germany also stated that in return they would give back Mexico's lost territory from Texas. Mexico declines Germany's offer, but this outrage caused Americans opinion on the war more supportive.

    The U.S congress declares a declaration of war on Germany on April 6, 1017. The U.S. is on the side of France and Britain. At this time, the U.S. President was Woodrow Wilson.

    The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed by Germany and Russia. The peace treaty gave Germany more land from the Ukraine and Poland. The treaty also allowed Germany to send soldiers to the Western front.

    Kaiser Wilhelm resigns, this means there is no longer a hope for Germany winning. He goes to The Netherlands and lives the rest of his life quietly and peacefully. He also writes a biography telling about his actions during the war.

    The war officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles. Germany had to pay for most of the damage. They were basically also blamed for the whole war. Germany had to pay for the damages because of the Dawes Plan and the Young Plan.
