    Francis Ferdinand is assassinated
    While visiting Sarajevo, Francis and his wife Sophie were driving through Sarajevo in an open car, when Gavrilo Princip shot both Francis and his wife dead. Austria-Hungry blamed the Serbian government for this. This was the starting point when World War 1 would begin.

  • Germany declares war on Russia and France

    Germany had warned Russia who was only partially mobilized, to continue to full mobilization against Austria-Hungry that if they did, it would mean war with Germany. Germany began its own mobilization when the Russians refused German demands, Germany declared war.
  • Erich Ludendorff led German troops into Belgium

    One of the first events of the war. They used many powerful weapons, that were first created and captured the city on August 5 and then headed towards France.
  • Siege of Tsingtao

    British and Japanese forces attacked the port of Tsingtao, a German colony in China. Japan takes over Germany's colonies in the Caroline, Mariana and Marshall Islands
  • Poison Gas is used for the war

    Both sides in the war used the new tear gas in the first winter war. But Germany used a much more deadly weapon. Xylyl bromide that killed around 1,000 Russian troops at Bolmov on the Eastern Front. They also used canisters of chlorine gas causing over 7,000 casualties among the British, Canadian and French.

    The British ocean liner was sunk from a German U-boat who torpedoed and sank the RMS Lusitania, which was traveling from New York, to Liverpool, England. More than 1,900 people on board, 1,100 died. Was a significant role that turned the public opinion again Germany

    British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from the German Foreign Minister, Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt that offered the United States territory to Mexico if they joined the German cause; which changed the course of history.   • The United States joins Allies to fight in the war

    The US supported the allies because of their ties, and shared history and language. Helped the Allies win the war
  • Selective Service Act is passed

    By passing this act, it gave the president the power to draft soldiers for the war. By Wilson signing the law, it required all men in the U.S. between ages of 21-30 to register for the military services. In a matter of months, almost 10 million men across the country had registered in response.
  • War Industries Board (WIB) is created

    Was created during WW1 to coordinate the purchase of war supplies, and encouraged companies to use mass-production techniques to increase efficiency and also set prices and determined what goods should be produced by a private industry. WIB was led by Bernard Baruch.
  • First America Win at Cantigny

    First America Win at Cantigny
    General John J. Pershing gave an order that Cantigny was to be surrendered. This first major victory had an impact on the war effort.
