19 year old Gavrilo Princip of the group called the Black Hand killed the Archduke on June 28, 1914. Both the Archduke and his wife were killed. This event is the real start to WW1.

Austria blamed Serbia for the assassination of the Archduke and his wife and declared war against Serbia. Even though Russia was allied with Serbia, they wanted to help. Germany did not believe that they would come through and help out Serbia, but they did. Russia began mobilizing their troops to the Austria border.

On August 1, 1914 Germany declared war against Russia. They did this because they saw what they did as a threat. Both France and Belgium helped Germany and began full mobilization.
