    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    During a visit to the Bosnian capital, Ferdinand and his wife were shot. They were shot by a Bosnian nationalists. This event sparked a chain of events before world war 1, contributing to the start of it.
  • World War 1 Begins

    World War 1 Begins
    War War 1 was also know as the great war, the first war that went global. It started after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary declared was on Serbia first. Serbia went to Russia for backup, eventually getting the world involved.
  • Battle of Gallipoli

    Battle of Gallipoli
    This was the first major campaign in the war. The battle was an unsuccessful attempt by the Allies to control the sea route from Europe to Russia. The allies suffered the loss of many casualties during this battle. The battle ended with the Allies retreating.
  • Lusitania Sinks

    Lusitania Sinks
    On May 5th, 1915 the British ship Lusitania sunk. The ship was torpedoed down by German U-boats who monitored the area. Around 1,198 crew members died, including 128 Americans. This also contributed to the US entry into the war.

    Battle of Verdun
    The battle of Verdun was the longest battle in the World War 1. This was a battle between Germany and France. It was fought on the western front in the hills of Verdun. France won this battle with Germany retreating to the loss of forces.
  • Battle of Somme

    This was a battle between France & England vs Germany. Casualties were in the hundred thousands this battle, with the Allies losing 200,000 more. This was one of the first trench battles fought in the war.
  • Zimmerman Note

    Zimmerman Note
    The Zimmerman note was a message sent to Mexico by Germany. It's purpose was to get Mexico on Germany's side for the war. This would allow closer access to the United States. The US soon entered the war after this note, declaring war on Germany.

    This was the main cause of Russia leaving ww1. This event also changed the Russian government. Russia became a communist country, throwing out the imperial government.

    Many events lead up to the U.S entering World War I. Events like the Lusitania sinking and the Zimmerman note caused America to enter the war. The U.S would then side with the Allies to take down the German superpower.

    Russia left the war because they were in the middle of a revolution. Russia's withdraw was a huge loss for the Allies, however since the U.S joined their side, there was still hope. After the revolution, Russia became a communist country.

    Under John J. Perishing's command, the Battle of Chateau Thierry was the first battle for America. It was a battle between the Americans and Germans. The Americans met the French before the battle; Majority of France's forces were newly trained troops.

    The battle of Argonne, also know as the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, was the Allies last offensive attack of WW1. It took place in the Argonne forest after the Germans retreated from the Marne river. This battle was an assurance that the allies were ahead, only a major mess up would lose them the war.

    On November 11th, 1918 World War 1 ended. After 37 million people died, the war stopped with the allies pulling the dub. The Armistice was signed in Compiegne, France.

    Treaty of Versailles Signed
    This is the most important peace treaty signed in WW1. The treaty was written by the allies with no participation of the Germans. The Germans signed it however some rebelled against it causing conflict.
  • First Meeting of the League of Nations

    First Meeting of the League of Nations
    The first meeting took place in Paris 6 days after the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The League of Nations was similar to the now day United Nations, actually being abolished and replaced by the United Nations. The League aimed at keeping world peace and enforce war rules created by the league.
